The River Maas, to which Rotterdam owes its existence, is an attracttion in itself. Boat trips along the river offer impressive views of the gigantic throughput facilities, which are shifting closer to the ocean all the time. At the same time, the inner-city docklands have been transformed into attractive, lively areas with busy pavement cafés; innovative architecture; unique bridges and an excellent choice of stores, restaurants and bars. Shopping in the modern downtown district with its wide choice of stores is a real treat. Many department stores in and around the city center also open on Sundays. Rotterdam has a very wide range of museums. From modern art to old masters; from architecture to photography; from historic ships to exotic animals. In addition to this, there are many interesting art galleries dotted around the city.
