Vigo's September figures: 18 cruise calls with 30,000 passengers and Hamburg Seatrade
Submitted by Vigo on SEPTEMBER 12, 2013
September is one of the months with the most intense cruise activity at Spanish ports due to the positioning routes for vessels from the Baltic to the Mediterranean seas, and Vigo will host 18 cruise ships that will account for almost 30,000 cruise passengers visiting Vigo city and surroundings.
Even though this year 2013 will not witness an increase in the number of calls due to restructurings and reschedules on some companies’ routes, Vigo will still be the leader among Northern Spanish ports at the end of this year regarding the number of cruise passengers, with forecasts of over 170,000 passengers.
Moreover, it is also important to mention that MSC CRUCEROS has chosen Vigo again as their embarkation port for one of their cruise routes towards Central and Northern Europe, a route that is planned to remain after this year given that their MSC OPERA had more than 10 successful calls at the Vigo Port.
Besides these interporting calls carried out by this Italian company, there have been other exciting moments at the Transatlantic Quay of the Port of Vigo this summer. On the one hand, it was the starting spot for one stage of the Spanish cycle race ‘La Vuelta’, last 19th August. The passengers on board the Independence of the Seas fully enjoyed this as they were the first-rate privileged witnesses. On the other hand, other major events were staged by very different cruise ships, all of them calling for the first time at Vigo and therefore being the guests of honour of their respective ceremonies of commemorative plaques exchange, such as ROYAL PRINCESS, WINDSURF or CELEBRITY INFINITY – this cruise ship includes Vigo in 6 of their wine theme routes, the “Immersive Wine Cruises”, just in the year that Atlantic Alliance has developed a marketing strategy based on the most typical gastronomy of their associated members, very focused on the wine offer.
One more year, the Port of Vigo will attend the Seatrade Europe Cruise Shipping Convention that is to be held in Hamburg during the last week of September. Our Port will be at a specific stand that will not be far from the generic stand hosted by ‘Puertos del Estado’, the official Spanish institution devoted to Spanish ports. The stand for ATLANTIC ALLIANCE, and the stand for CRUISE EUROPE will also be located close by.
The stand hosted by the Port Authority will also be used by the most active shipping agents and tour operators in Vigo. Apart from this intensive agenda, Vigo will take part in the official events organised by ATLANTIC ALLIANCE – a breakfast meeting with shipping companies and the ceremony awarding a special prize to one of them on the 24th – and CRUISE EUROPE, with important meetings to be held by the board of directors in which the Port Authority will participate since it is part of the organization’s Council, as well as in different social events aimed at promoting networking.
