Submitted by Lisbon on AUGUST 28, 2013
The cruise ship Funchal, many times named the crown jewel of the national merchant navy, was officially inaugurated in the port of Lisbon by the Prime Minister, Pedro Passos Coelho.
The emblematic vessel is now a luxury ship, having been subjected to a total refurbishment, an action that provided her more elegance and glamor and a five-star category.
This operation took place after the ship has been acquired by Portuscale Cruises, the company which has already planned for the "Funchal" several itineraries, included in the maiden voyage between Lisbon and Northern Europe for a total of 46 days. The cruise ship will depart from Lisbon calling by Oporto, Villagarcia de Arousa, Brest, Ostende and Gothenburg. The remaining itineraries will take place between Gothenburg, the North Cape, Fjords of Norway, Scotland, and ending in Lisbon.
The Lisbon Port Authority congratulates the return of the Funchal and particularly salutes the Portuscale Cruises and all those who over time have been able to turn this ship in a rare case of success and longevity.
To celebrate the departure for the maiden voyage, the port of Lisbon will present the the ship's captain with a plaque commemorating the occasion, and the ship will be escorted by the tugs boats until the exit of the Tagus estuary, in collaboration with Svitzer company.
